Engine 850: B5204S/2.0/20v: - Help what now?

Hello all
I followed advice about temperature sender on my 850 and after replacing thermostat housing and most of the skin on bothe hands and arms, I started the car.Brrmm brrmm up to temperature cough splutter cut out. Oh dearie me I say after all that effort as well. Cup of tea later start car and it runs unevenly then flattens out, mmmm. then the engine starts to hunt slightly and revs up to 2k then down then up again and cuts out. There was a fault code for the temp sender but I cleared that as I assumed it was the old one I hadnt cleared. The fan is kicking in immediately, any ideas anybody please?

Hi, have you replaced both the thermostat and temp sender? If so did you use a genuine sendor?....

Yes I thought it made sense to do the stat while I had the cover off, but I checked the old one anyway and it was fine. I took the cam sensor off to check that and there was some oil in there. The drain hole was blocked so I cleared it. Ran fine for a while then same old story.AAAARRRGGHHHH

This means the ECU is not 'seeing' the temperature sensor.

Either the wiring is faulty or you have fitted the wrong sensor.

Did you fit a genuine unit?

Well it should be it came from volvoparts online but you never can tell. I am seriously thinking about fitting the one that came with the thermostat housing which looks ok. When I am elected supreme ruler of the universe I intend to ban the use of torx nuts and bolts.

I have just replaced the new sensor from volvoparts online with one that arrived with the stat housing result Happy Volvo Owner.....I think

that is one of my pet hates too and why do car companies insist on using a million and one differnet sized bolts to hold things on

JUST USE THE SAME STYLE OF BOLTS BE IT NORMAL BOLTS OR ALAN BOLTS OR STAR DRIVE OR TORX DONT BL**DY MIX AND MATCH THEM

If you drained the system, you did bleed it when you refilled didn't you? If not then the engine would get very hot very quickly. There may be a massive air bubble in your system preventing coolant from circulating properly and preventing said coolant coming into contact with the temperature sender.
