Default 3.2 Petrol vs D5

Would love to hear from 3.2 owners regarding running costs vs the D5.

Have been told that 3.2 will deliver 28mpg against 32mpg for the D5 - what do you think?

Also servicing costs / longevity - as a high mileage user (20k per year) can I expect some interesting service bills with the petrol variant.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I think if you are driving in a way that gets an average of 32 mpg in the D5 , then changing to a 3.2 petrol would see around 20 mpg ...

Depends what you do with your right foot.

For my 2004 2.5T auto

Fully loaded 2 lane roads with plenty of overtaking (typical averages - a strong headwind will take its toll)

at 65 mph 27 mpg (even 28-29 when roads heavily policed)
at 70 mph 26 mpg

city driving 18-19 mpg (my wife matches this in her AWD v50 2.5t !!!)
city commuting 22-23 mpg

I understand the 3.2 is better in city and no different in country driving but slightly worse perfomance).

As an aside, a 450km trip with and without a 50kg box on roof bars confirmed it is worth about 1.5-2 mpg at 70 mph (this was in the V50).

My 2003 XC90 D5.... 35 to 40 mpg depending on journey type. 42 mpg best ever run to Scotland.

My 2008 XC70 3.2, is now averaging 23 MPG (gone up to that!) so I would say perhaps 5% less for 90, same drivetrain just heavier & less aerodynamic.

Somewhere I have a spreadsheet that will calculate fuel costs petrol vs diesel, if you want a forecast doing drop me a message.

Wow - guess I can look forward to around the 20mpg mark then!

Should be able to verify in a couple of weeks if deal comes off. Looking forward to the joys of ownership (or otherwise if you spend too much time reading on here!)

In the absense of any specifics I'll work on the basis that service costs for the 3.2 will be comparable to the d5?
