V50 Problem
Yesterday whilst driving my 4 month old V50 2.0D down the autoroute at about 130km/h there was a loudish bang, loss of power and lots of black smoke from the exhaust.
I pulled onto the hard shoulder and the engine carried on running but sounded very sick. I continued at about 20km/h for about 2 kilometres to the next exit and pull into a local BMW dealer. The engine was very spluttery whilst crawling along. Their mechanic kindly looked it over and thought there was a problem with the turbo. When I pressed the accelerator there was a loud whistling noise with more black smoke from the exhaust. So, I called the breakdown service as I didn't want to risk driving it any further. When the breakdown guy arrived he discovered that a pipe from the turbo to the engine had become disconnected. I don't know exactly what this pipe joins together but it is located at the bottom front of the engine (to the right of the car if you look at it from the front). THe jubilee clip that held it on was just screwed on hard enough. The mechanic re-fixed the pipe and everything seems fine now and it's running normally. My question is whether or not I should to take it to a Volvo dealer for them to check it out? Could any damage have been done with this sort of failure at 130km/h? The car is only 4 months old with 6000kms on the clock. |

RE: V50 Problem
perhaps the bang was literally just the pipe popping off, like a cork.
But sounds as though no real dammage has been done if its running normally now I should take it in and get it checked out anyhow, as your car is obviously still under warrantee |

RE: V50 Problem
It's practically new and under warranty.
Take it to a dealer and make them give you a written assurance that it has not caused any unseen damage to the engine. |

RE: V50 Problem
yup, good advise.
the pipe your talking about is the ambient compressed air flow out of the turbo, the pipe go's to the front of the car where the intercooler is, & then back into the engine (cool) for reignition. when the pipe popped of all that would have happened was that the turbo would have been venting into the engine bay, hence the loud turbo noise. with very low pressure into the inlet manifold your car would have been struggling to keep going, this all ties i with what you were exsperiencing i think. i think no harm would have accured but still seek assurance & get it logged. |

RE: V50 Problem
If it was a big thick pipe then almost certainly the pipe to the intercooler.
For the distance you ran it your car was not getting it's air through the turbo or AIRFILTER ! Shouldn't be a problem for a short distance unless you were driving through a sandstorm. But get it logged by the dealer in case you have future problems |
