Angry misfiring

can anyone please help. My petrol pump packed up. New one fitted since when occasionally when moving very slowly forward or backward the car will judder. Now the car is misfiring whilst on the move as though there is muck in the fuel line. If I lift off it clears. When flooring it the engine coughs and sounds as though only firing on four cylinders. After a 5 to 10 seconds the engine "clears" and takes off. If I accelerate gently the misfire continues until I lift off and then maintain the slower speed.I don`t know if this problem is related to fuel or a coincidence. I once had this problem years ago on a golf G.T.i and that was a faulty plug lead.I shall appreciate any opinions. Thanks Jack.

Have you changed the fuel filter?

It may be that when the original fuel pump failed debris was passed into the filter blocking it.

Jack,

I've just had almost the same symptoms as yourself along with fuel pump failure. For me the miss-fire started suddenly half way through a fun thrash back from Bristol one evening about a week after changing the fuel pump.

On checking the next day the cause was too large plug gaps (cos I'd been forgetful and not checked them in 60k miles!). Once reset the car ran fine and much smoother - there's a surprise lol
