Default Alarm ECU

I have a R-reg S40, a week ago or so my one and only key fob stopped working for the alarm and central locking while the car was locked. After changing the batteries the fob still did not work. Next i accidentaly set the alarm off using the key to open the door, so i have now disconnected the alarm ecu (grey box under the drivers side dash) (thanks Ex Bmw Owner) so i can now use the car. However, i have no alarm or central locking (and weirdly no interior light).

I have heard it is possible to swap my alarm ECU with one from a similar car as long as it has a working remote fob. Firstly does anyone have any more information on this and has done it, secondly does anyone have a spare alarm ECU and working remote they dont need/want anymore, i could buy off them.

My car is a 2.0litre petrol manual s40, 1998
the remote is a 2 button remote part no. 30851156
the volvo keyless entry alarm ECU is part no. 30824425

Thanks in advance for any help

P.S. My local main dealer said this could only be done by them and would cost me £385.48. WTF!!!!

yes you can use one from another 1998 model the same as yours , Any S40 / V40 1998 remote can be programmed to the control unit at the dealer , no software , it's a 5 minute job with a hand held tool .

the plug you unclipped will work the central locking, indicator flasher (alarm)
and also the interior lights on door opening, so don't worry about the lights its normal. You will find if turn the interior lights on by hand (if need em) they should still be fine. ooo forgot also the button on centre console that locks the doors wont work either (obviously with no central locking doh...lol).
