Cant set the clock on V50

I feel a right plum i cant seem to set the clock on the dash .I took the battery off and when i put it back on where the clock was its now dashes.Can anyone tell me how to set pleeeeaaaaasssseeee its driving me maaaaaaadddddd.
And relax.

I had a problem when the clocks went forward last. The book said to turn the spindle on the left hand side but it felt like it was going to snap off at first so I thought that must be wrong but sure enough when I applied more pressure it started to change the digits on the clock!
