bad idle 440, please help
hey there
im jus wondering does anyone know how to fix or whats the cause of my erratic idle on volvo 440 1.7 carb, because when I'm driving along an i have pushed the choke all the way in the revs drop below 1000 rpm an it keeps makin the noise as if its gonna conk out i read in a haynes manual something about an idle screw? so i checked an i dont have one lol so these are my questions can you buy "idle screws"? if so where please? How would i fix the erractic/bad idle? also i read somewhere on the forum about cleaning something near the carburaetor? and lastly (sorry for all the questions lol) when i hav pushed the choke all the way in for eg on the motorway it keeps poppin out? why ? thanks for taking time to read this

Idle control valve? Volvo do a good spray cleaner ( dear though ) ... apart from rising temp. erratic idle must be the most posted Volvo 440 matter lol ... I'll see what I can find
Eh, just a thought ... could the cable just be stiff? I found exactly the same as you're saying having not started my 460 for about a year!

I don't think the carb version has the same idle control valve as the efi version.
carb.1.jpg Here is where you can change the idle. |

I'd first check the following: whether turning the idle control screw changes the idle, the flap before the air filter is in the correct position and whether the idle control valve opens or not.

You could try asking for one separately but i'd doubt you'll get one. Try a scrapyard and ask for just the screw off a used carb. Hope they wouldn't charge you for the whole carb though...

Yes, you can only adjust the idle when the running engine is warm and when the choke is pushed in.
I found it surprising that you said there wasn't an idle control screw: i was thinking how on earth would it be working at all |
