1996 estate - Alarm
Sorry if thi s already on here but I did do an advanced search first and couldn't match my problem.
About a year ago I turned the alarm off as the remote fobs seemed to be giving trouble and it just seeemed easier to lock/unlock the car with the key. With the onset of winter I want to try to fix the remote locking problem but the red LED on the dash top is out permanently and I think???? I need it lit before I can start the whole remote fob programming sequence. Is this right?? If so how I do I reactivate the alarm if I do not have remotes that seem to work anymore?? The owners manual only tells you how to do it using the remote!!!

You don't need the LED on to sort the remote problem.
However there is a ignition key sequence to get the LED on to program new remotes, is this what you mean? |

and how do I get the alarm activated again? When I turned that off it was as per the owners manual....ignition on and hold the button for 3 secs.

Reprogramming remotes 850:
All doors/boot closed not locked. Make sure you have the all remotes you want to program next to you, it's easier if not on the same key ring as the ign key as they all have to be done within 10 seconds. With the ignition key inserted, turn the key 5 times from off position to the ON (II) position (NOT THE CRANKING POSITION)!...within 10sec, ending in the ON position. The Dash LED should be flashing at this point. Press any button on the first remote, the LED flash rate should change to show it's responded to it. When the LED flash rate returns to the original press any button on the second remote. If necessary repeat for a third remote (max three). When LED stops flashing switch off ignition and try remotes, good luck! |

Thanks Chris. I tried about 20 times this afternoon to no avail. The LED flashes but does not turn solid when I press any of the remotes so I guess the electronics won't recognise them.
I split both remotes last night and checked them. Batteries all 3.2 or 3.3V, all PCB's are clean and the numbers match on both PCB's. One certainly worked when I got the car. I suppose what I don't understand is why the alarm isn't working?? David

From memory the alarm can only be set with the remote, so if the remotes don't work nor will the alarm.
