Default worn drive shaft?

I have been told that the clunk heard when changing from drive to reverse or back ( V70 auto) is due to a worn drive shaft. How serious is this and how likely is it to fail completely? Thanks.

Hi,

was it definitely drive shaft? I ask as I don't know much about the All Wheel Drive cars, so if they said prop shaft then whatever I say next will probably be rubbish :-) Would help if you give us a bit more info about the car, either in your signature (appears below your posts) or in your profile. For example engine type, year, etc.

Anyway, a clunk going from drive to reverse (or vice versa) is quite often a sign the auto box fluid is getting past its best. If you do a search on here you for the words auto and flush you should find lots of info.

If they really do mean drive shaft I guess there's a few possibilities:

1) The drive shaft splined end is rocking in the diff. This would probably be wear and tear and would be unlikely to fail completely in the short term I'd say. The fix would be a new driveshaft, see 3 for details.

2) The diff itself has play in it. Again, probably not going to catastrophically fail but it's an almost impractical job to fix it as it would mean removing the gearbox to replace the diff.

3) There's play in the CV shaft (probably inner, else you'd get clonking on full steering loc). This is again unlikely to fail completely in my opinion (the noise it'd be making all the time if it was failing badly would be unmissable and not only reverse-drive). This could be fixed by replacing the drive shaft. Not a bad job, can be done on your own drive with sufficient DIY mechanics tools/ability.

That's just a few of my thoughts, maybe others have different advice.

HTH, Pete

Had this on the C70 (manual), not long after purchasing.
It was done under warranty so I'm a bit vague about what they did.
AFAIK they changed the drive shaft bolts for XC70 ones. And glued (?), their word, I presume loctited the shafts/bolts.
Been fine for over 18months, 12k miles now.

Default drive shafts

Are you sure its drive shafts and not an incorrectly adjusted box? As the adjustment from P to D or N to D may not be correct leading to a clunk when you take up drive a good way to tell is stick the car in reverse drive for a few feet see if the clunk is still there if not its an incorrect auto box adjustment

The drive shafts will fail completely eventually but when a garage refers to a worn drive shaft what they normally refer to is either

The splines that slot into the hub or the gearbox which is a major problem especially if the splines are worn at the box end as the internal mating splines could also be worn leading to a new box or at best serious work on the gearbox.

Support bearings on the drive shafts which if they fail could allow the drive shaft to move in any direction destroying the CV joint and or the splines as the shaft moves under the damaged bearings.

If its an AWD/4x4 its mostly the internal splines that wear our as all the shafts rotate eventually winding up [common in 4x4s like landrovers] easy cure simply lift the car up and allow the shafts to unwind
