Default Diagnostics

I posted this question yesterday and it seems to have fallen off the board, so I'll try again...probably user error!

I have the engine management light on at the moment, due to a fault with the front O2 sensor on my 2001 S60 2.4T

I plan to replace the sensor over the Christmas break as it looks like a doddle to fix, but I don't know if the engine management system has stored the fault and won't notice I've fitted the new sensor without being plugged in to the Diagnostic Tool for a manual re-set.

Will it turn the light off when I've replaced the sensor or will I have to fork out for for another session on the laptop?

I cant comment on the o2 sensor, but normally when I get a fault once fixed the warning goes off. (Although it does store the code in memory)

One other option would be to buy your own code reader.

Nordic do one, "BSR PPC" which can read and reset all codes. The price goes up and down, currently I think they are around 100, but have been as low as 50 and as high as 150.

Even if you pay 100, you can have your money back after saving 2 trips to the dealer.

Also very handy to have if your car throws a hissy fit when out and about. Resetting the codes just may get you home.

An O2 sensor code is usually reset after three drive cycles without the fault presnt.
A drive cycle is a cold start to engine at normal working temp.

How about other code readers like ELM 323/327 which are really cheap?
Are they compatible with Volvo S60?
I own 04 reg, so it's OBD2 compliant, isn't it?

Only the BSR PPC (and the genuine Volvo reader) will clear fault codes stored in sub-systems - even if they haven't caused a warning light to illuminate.

Generic readers may clear engine management lights but that's about it.

YellowPinkie I have a PPC and I'm based in Leighton Buzzard if you find you need to get the fault codes cleared.
