Water pump?
I've got a 95 1.8 Si, which has started making a funny noise (not long after fixing another nasty noise, and a third minor noise starting :s ).
It started off sounding like a belt rubbing on something, but rapidly (a few miles) degenerated into a sound like a load of chunks of metal being spun round inside something. It seems to be coming from around the alternator/water pump. Likely to be the water pump? Should the pulley move if the pump's going? (it doesn't) Is there any way of checking if it's the pump or not before I start taking things off? |

Do not drive it anymore before you checked the timing belt and it's pulleys! Sounds like one of the belt pulleys is gone, if the belt breaks you're probably in for a few new valves. If this happens the valves will hit the pistons and this will bent the valve stems. Most of the times the timing belt will break at a cold start as this will stress the belt the most.

Spot on, B20F. It's the guide pulley on the cambelt.
Can't get it off though! |

You have to replace everything, alignment wheel, tensioner and belt. Don't know if you're a DIY, but here's a howto
It's from a 480, but engine is the same.

Re:
Thanks, I found that one-excellent. Really helped.
I think my problems stem from someone changing the belt but not the pulleys. Unfortunately, the front bolt on the guide pulley was totally seized. Couldn't get it off. Why do they use allen bolts? It was already partially rounded off. I filed the edges flat to get a spanner round it, didn't work. Tried drifting it round, didn't work. Gave up. The less accessible one at the back was completely rounded off already. I new I should have got a 700... :P |
