Wheel bolt torque
How much torque do I tighten the wheel bolts and locking wheel bolt on a S60? I thought I would post this in here as it might get overlooked in the S60 section.
Thanks. |

Torque talk
110 Newton metres is the usual for alloy wheels AFAIK.

IIRC, its around 100NM for FWD, and 80-85NM for RWD Volvos.

The handbook for my 960 specifies 85 Nm - which I always check using my own torque wrench if the car's ever been in anywhere and had the wheels disturbed.
On the subject of lubrication of the studs, this really does raise a lot of heated argument in some quarters, with even 'expert' opinions being divided. Most torque recommendations refer to dry threads (unless otherwise stated) and many argue - quite reasonably - that lubricating the threads on wheel studs can result in damage to the alloy wheels or brake discs through over-tightening. But, I've seen many badly corroded and seized wheel studs/nuts in my time, so I do apply a thin smear of copper grease to the threads and contact cones on my wheels, mainly to prevent corrosion and seizure, on the basis that the design loadings will have a good margin of tolerance and I make sure that I don't exceed the Volvo-recommended torque figures. In 35 years of doing this I've never had any problems - and never had any corroded or seized wheel nuts! Stan. |

Funny thing is, I knew it was 110, but my S60 Haynes Manual says 160 all the way through!! Just as well I've got a tiny bit of common sense!
