Default Black smoke from exhaust

Have a '51 D5, that goes a treat. Its now done 165000, recently on accel when the turbo is winding up , it sounds like theres an air leak from under the car, at 3000 rpm a thunmping sound starts and the peformanxce tails off. I was at the lights the other night and a taxi pulled up, I noticed black somke and pointed at his car he leaned out of window and said it was from mine -doh !! Pulled over nad sure enough thick black smoke on accel. I have a feeling its coming from the turbo, the sound from under the car on accel sounds like bearing whine ? Has anybody had carbon build up blocking the return/feed lnes to the turbo ?

Black Smoke on Diesels is usually over fuelling. I`d check for an air leak after the air flow meter for a start.

Thanks for that, I did think white for oil, black for fuel but started thinking gotta be turbo. The air is like a dumping sound, that also sounds abit like bearing going !

Its in the garage tomoz, after limping there, so hoopefully won't be too expensive.

Cheers dude

Favourite for the black smoke is a blown intercooler (check for oil under radiator area) or leaking associated pipework.
The thumping sound at 3000 rpm followed by limp mode sounds very much like the turbo inlet tube collapsing with the suction, the rubber goes soft with age, replacement part around £55 from Volvo only.
I would also suggest cleaning the EGR pipework, there are threads on here regarding this.
