Default Electrically adjusting mirrors

This query applies to both 200's and 700's for sure and, maybe, even to latest models?

I have a 262C that has the electric mirror adjustment. Well, in theory it does! Although the switches down under the handbrake lever on the center console work in all four senses: up, down, left and right; the mirrors only respond left or right. Thus (say) switch both up & left actually adjust the mirror view to the left, and similarly for down & right.

Below is the workshop manual diagram:

As you should be able to see, the mirror is only fitted with one electric motor and ... a relay? Does the mirror unit have some sort of 'gearbox' controlled by the relay, to cater for 'up&down', 'left&right' respectively?

I'd like to know for certain before I go to the trouble of fitting replacement switches that I assume are faulty.

Thanks for any help.

Andy

Wotcher.
You're correct, there is only one motor. The direction of travel is altered with worm drives, moved along a shaft by, I think, a solenoid. More than this, I'm afraid, I do not know.
Best of luck, Nick.

I would be tempted to try cleaning the switches and checking that all connections to the switches work as they should. You will notice that the relay/solenoid has it's earth connected via the internal wiring of the switch. from your diagram it looks as if both switches have only two connections feeding in, +ve to the top connection and -ve to the middle connection (in between the two switches). The other four connections go to each mirror. It is quite possible that the internal connection from the Brown wire may have been disconnected inside the switch, but as this is unlikely to affect both together I would suspect that some oxidation has taken place at the switch contacts. Anyway give the cleaning a try (it might be possible to spray some WD40 inside the switch then agitate the switch, obviously with the switch out of the car, and check if contact is restored. It is also probable that the solenoid mechanism has become dirty and in need of cleaning inside the mirror unit.

All the best, Peter
