Smile Volvo 440 Si 1.6 N Registration

Hello Everybody!

I'm new to all this, so I appologise in advance if this pops up in the wrong place.

Today, I've bought a Volvo 440 Si. I used to own the vehilce, why I sold it in the first place is beyond me. Anyway I've bought it back. There is nothing wrong with the car except, the fuel gauge/fuel sender. When you start the car, the needle does not move, the orange fuel pump light comes on and then goes when you turn the key and start the car. The needle still doesnt move! I obviously need to fix this problem. Is there anything I can do myself so I don't have to take it to a garage. Would a sender out of a differnt model volvo fit? Any help with this would be gratefully appreciated, I'm not mechanically minded in any shape way or form, so the help would be great. Thank you to any body who replies in advance.

Hello,

You could try and have a look at the wires that go to the fuel sender located under the rear seat (maybe a broken wire...) by removing the two bolts that hold the seat belt buckles. There's a black lid that covers the fuel pump, fuel lines and wires. Or it could be the sender in the instrument cluster that has a faulty connection (since the low petrol level light works).

Each to their own, but I've been driving my 440 for almost 10 years now with a non - functioning fuel gauge. It's not really a worry ... only if it doesn't go out on downhill / uphill. I once did a full 60 km. on the "idiot light", and afaik the tank still has 6 litres when it comes on, so if you don't get it sorted maybe consider gauge free motoring?

Tbh I've never found the gauge in any of my Volvos to be much more than a rough guide anyway. Most stay in the one place for ages then suddenly drop.

Regards,

Tony.
