Which ISO lead?
Hi all I have finally decided to change my radio for a new fangled cd playing thingy.I have got it and now hope someone here can help me.
I have looked on the bay for the correct ISO lead and as usual it's contradicting info I'm getting. Some say this will fit 740 and 940 models of the same sort of overlapping years? And others state different ones for each car. Of coarse I have to own an inbetweeny year 740.It's a "H"reg 1990 2.3l GLE estate. The haynes manuals I have is for 1982 to 1991 and the wiring diagrams only go up to WD8 1989 supplemetary page. My radio is a CR-702 with the preamp fitted,By chance I have a 940 radio CR-708 which came from my "J"reg 1991 which has the connector in the radio but my radio has a lead with a different number of pins to the other one,now I mention the 940 one because the ebay ones are saying the same lead for 740 and 940 of the same year??? Somebody here must have the answer and I'm sure I read somewhere that because of the AMP you have to have an extra lead or something to bypass it. The newish radio I got is a Ripspeed CMR-2000 oldish but good enough for me. And I looked in halfords and they have a lead for the 940 of the correct year but haven't got one for mine. They even have an adaptor for the surround which states it will fit 740 and 940 only thing is the original surrounds I have are both slightly different in length so it can't fit in both as it states. I may just give up. The ones on ebay are so much cheaper than halfords as well. I hope someone can help me pretty please Brian. |

Your car should require the PC2-19-4 wiring connector and FP-10-01 fascia adaptor:
What does the back of the cr702 look like? Does it have two sockets similar to the ones in the above pic marked 'vehicle'? If so that is the correct harness adaptor for you. The adaptor has two tails, one short and one long that goes to bypass the amp that is mounted under the dashboard, above the accelerator pedal. As for the fascia adaptor, the above should fit. Remember that you also discard the surround that is attached to the Volvo unit. As an example this is what mine looks like: Note that the fascia adaptor fills the full width of the console.

Hi thanks for helping. My radio has two lots of wires coming out the back and the round socket for the amp plug even the blanked off round hole for the equalizer. The big socket has seventeen pins although not all are utilised.and the smaller plug has two wires or pins.
It's quite a bit different to the 940 one.It is the original radio as I went to volvo for the code based on the reg no. The facia adaptor on the CR-702(740) is a little thinner top to bottom than the CR-708(940) maybe not enough to make them truly different? These are the pictures of both radios the first ones are the CR-702(740) and the second lot are CR-708(940) Thanks for trying to help Brian. |

I usually just solder in a pigtail lead (ISO connector with wires) to save space, connection is pretty simple, wires are labelled. Ignition 12V, permanent 12V + speaker wires.

Hi Tony I was thinking of doing just that!
Although the manual is a pain to read I'm sure by studying the colour of the respective wires it may be possible. The only difficulty is that all the speaker wires go into the preamp and then connect into the radio via the old type DIN socket.I would have to identify the various wires as they go into the amp and connect them straight into the new radio, doing away with it and the Din socket that feeds into it. Thanks Brian. |

You need to follow the amp lead to the amplifier. Then locate the speaker wire plug on the other side of the amp and see what shape that is. It should match the second of the two 'vehicle' connectors in thge above pic.
The original amp wire and the amp can be removed as it will not be used in the new installation.

Just remove the panel that surrounds the pedals and jiggle the amp lead about. You can then follow the lead back to the amp's location.

Hi I followed your advice and bought the lead! All I need to know now is how can I make it so the radio comes on regardless of the ignition?
I need a permanent live(which colour wire)And I also need to disconnect the ignition live again which one.I have already asked this on another post but thought I would update this thread at the same time. I looked in the haynes but my eyes and brain are now hurting so someone out there must know the easy answer please. Kind Regards Brian. |
