changed my rear wheel bearings not long back and found h/brake shoes completly knackered.new shoes were only £20 and seemed to go on without too much trouble.just made sure there were no burr,s on the disc/drum and refitted it.the h/brake was brill after that so i presume it had an auto adjuster.dont be afraid to use some force to remove the disc/drum your hardly going to break it.a copper mallet is very useful.

Just done an online MOT check for my car as its MOT is due in october.
I bought the car in April, but it had a missing advisory notice.
Quick online check has confirmed:

Offside Parking brake Your vehicle has only just met the required park brake efficiency. It would appear that the braking system requires adjustment or repair. (3.7.A.10)

So looks like I might need to have the wheels off.
Other than change the shoes what is there to do?

Other than shoes, lubricate moving components/surfaces, then adjustment and balance is important too.

I would still be careful, as I have seen the small brackets that the shoe retaining springs attach to come off the backplate (wee spot weld) at one end, which leaves you to reweld or replace the backplate.

I have found that the handbrake does not need readjustment (manual adjuster) as the new disks and shoes slide together without any adjustment.

I am not so sure re the auto adjuster -it looks a tricky piece of work to adjust/setup in VIDA, but there again, that may just be the way its explained!

At least there is no ECU controlled handbrake, so no popping pistons!
