no you will have to use a transaxle designed for diesel ,the ratios of a petrol will ruin the efficiency of the diesel engine , it will be all revs

local breakers yards should be able to supply you with the required gearbox at a reasonable price, I imagine there will be quite a few 440's in the scrapyards.
Might be worth a look here, http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=V....c0.m270.l1313

Hi Andrew.
Sorry this isn't relevant to your problem, I hope you get it sorted.
I'm changing my car to something more cost effective and was looking at a 440 TD.
How have you found the mpg on yours? Parkers quotes 50 mpg, would you still get that from a 14 year old car?
Cheers
Rich

If you don't find a 'box to a 400 series then a 'box off a Renault diesel (19, Clio, Laguna?) will fit. It's also not good putting a petrol engine 'box on 'cause it might not be able to take the larger torque (you can put a diesel 'box onto a petrol engine but the different ratios will make it drive weird). A 'box from a 400 turbo would be good for a diesel though. Hope you find a gearbox for yours.
