Andrew
I recently put a years m.o.t on my 440 diesel turbo 1800cc year 1996-7 ,then two days later the gear box went ! could only get 5th so i shaged the clutch aswell !!does anyone out there know weather a 1.8 petrol gear box would fit and drive o.k ? its the same year . my main concern is the gear ratio`s the main number on the gear box is :JC5223 ,if that helps ! I really need to fix this car as my other means of transport is a m/cycle and winter is looming!!!! Please could anyone help ?? Cheers Andrew

no you will have to use a transaxle designed for diesel ,the ratios of a petrol will ruin the efficiency of the diesel engine , it will be all revs

Hi Andrew.
Sorry this isn't relevant to your problem, I hope you get it sorted. I'm changing my car to something more cost effective and was looking at a 440 TD. How have you found the mpg on yours? Parkers quotes 50 mpg, would you still get that from a 14 year old car? Cheers Rich

If you don't find a 'box to a 400 series then a 'box off a Renault diesel (19, Clio, Laguna?) will fit. It's also not good putting a petrol engine 'box on 'cause it might not be able to take the larger torque (you can put a diesel 'box onto a petrol engine but the different ratios will make it drive weird). A 'box from a 400 turbo would be good for a diesel though. Hope you find a gearbox for yours.
