12V socket staying on
Hi all!!
So I have had my lovely R-design for nearly 2 weeks now and am really enjoying it! Drives wonderfully, very comfy and looks the biz!! I've fitted a Garmin 1490T in place of the standard (ridiculously expensive) factory SatNav unit, and have put it into a spare housing I bought from Volvo Spares. All this was after reading quite a bit of useful info on these forums for which I thank you all. The overall effect is pretty good (I'll post some piccies later). I didn't quite get enough time at the weekend to route the power in fully, so currently have it on a flying lead which I plug directly into the 12V socket. The Garmin has a feature which switches itself off automatically when power is removed, and this is obviously an additional advantage when turning the ignition off. However, what I've noticed is that when I lock the car, the 12V socket turns back on for about 5-10 seconds, turning the Garmin back on again. It's not a problem now as I can simply pull the plug out of the socket, but could be a problem if I wire it in permanently into that supply. Anyone any ideas why it should do it and where else I should look at picking the feed from if not from the 12V socket circuit? |

This is a known issue for some navigation units, my nav (Cydle T43H) will turn off after iginition is off, turn back on after unlock and turn off again after the 12V feed is finally off.
I don't know why Volvo do this but the only solution I can think of is to put a capacitor in place to delay the second power on so your Garmin will not turn back on. I'm not an electronic engineer so my suggestion may not work... |

I have a Garmin 760 fitted in just the same way and you are right it does indeed do as you say.
i.e., close the door, lock the car, and power remains on to the Garmin for about 5 seconds before turning off and then you get the "external power has been lost" msg on the garmin and it counts down from 15 to zero before cutting off power completely Mine is permanently hard wired into the arm-rest rear 12 v socket line but have an fitted an override switch next to the Aux and USB port in the arm rest which allows me to manually switch the until off (or the unit hangs) Very easy to fit in this way - I left orginal cigareete plug from the Garmin hehind the dash and used a suitable connector and wiring to fit into the feed for 12 v socket behind the armrest - just go to Maplins and buy some connectors, switch and an in-line fuse.....
