Default Cambelt Condition after 84k miles

Guys

I finally got the cambelt, pulley and tensioner changed on my Y2005 D5 today - and was pleasantly surprised how good condition the original kit was still in.

Given that the scheduled change is at 96k miles, I did not want to tempt fate, so at 84k, did the job.

The kits comprises of the three parts - belt, pulley and tensioner.

First up - the pulley - it showed very slight signs of lubricant leaking from the sealed bearing - but had zero play evident, so far.

Next, the tensioner - this had no signs of lubricant egress, but play was certainly felt in the bearing. It was not noisy - but noticeable when stripped.

Lastly - the belt. To be honest, of all the cambelts I whave changed over the years, this one is in the best condition of any I have removed. There are zero signs of any wear or degredation of the belt, either within the tooth roots or the sides.

And, lastly, the part number of the original belt...

So - given the condition of these parts, either I am lucky, or, these parts must have a service life way over the reccomended change period... at least its another job off the list.

David

PS - the above engine category in the thread prefix: is there really a D52447 model or did someone type "7" in place of a "T"?!?!?!

is this a job for the home mechanic?

my 2006 d4 (83k on the clock) needs doing - i was quoted £300 from local dealer.

i have torque wrench and a good set of tools, so was wondering if i could do the job myself?

I did our T6 whilst I had the gearbox out as access is tight. I was glad I did it 5k miles early as the belt looked bad. The T6 is quite difficult, but I think the D5 is within the capability of a competent home mechanic as there is better acces and I believe they are single cam. I have also been told you don't have to take the bottom pulley off on a D5, but I was told that on the T6 too, and you definately do have to on a T6.
