The limo would have started life as a 4 door saloon (usually GL) and then rebuilt as a limo. The log book for our 740 limo just describes it as a 740 GL.
The limos and hearses normally started life as a saloon and were then stripped down as needed for the appropriate conversion and the new panels fitted along with brake and suspension upgrades and the other obvious limo/hearse parts like the handbrake, exhausts, prop and so on. There were also odd cars that were customer conversions which accounted for a manual turbo hearse converted from an estate that had been rear-ended on delivery.

Hi all I just started My quest to find out info on my Limo,I started by having a look at the last mot centre which it had a known four mot's and the area it was in was Gateshead Newcastle upon Tyne. The Mot's I found in electronic format downloaded from Directgov. The earliest being 8-9-2006 and the previous owner aquired the car in 19-11-2005.
Then I google searched the last known owners address and did street view which is also Gateshead and sat outside a double garage by a bungalow next to a modern Jaguar is MY black Limo! Now whats the chances of that happening. The date on the picture is 2009 so the search goes on.I may just send a groveling letter to the last owner in the hope he may have more history for me.This is quite interesting the more you get into it. Regards Sherlock Brian. |

Hi Mike long time no hear I was busy typing when you wrote your reply but thanks for the info,I need all the help offered with this one. So you reckon it might have been a GL.I do know with help that it was built in the Torslanda factory and something strange unless it's a volvo production thing it's Black under the bonnet? So it must have been black from day one.I have heard that with the 740 ones they start off as a standard colour and get sprayed black after the conversion.
Thanks Brian. |

Funnily enough, on the way home yesterday I met a chap who has a 746 limo, a navy blue one (with Dracos) that he bought in 2008 in Sanquhar, Scotland.
Looking at the VIN number, it has the 744 designation. Unlike the 946, this 746 was built in Belgium.
