Had almost the same thing on my 940 Turbo..no one.other than Clan and Mollusc had a clue...they aforementioned guy's however were both correct..Ignition amplifier

It would run dead on 5 miles each time..then wallop..no warning would cut out dead (bloody scary when crossing major junctions!) and not re-strat...yet it would sit and idle all day...as soon as it was under load..wallop...could would be so hot (open Circuit?) you could not touch it without literally burning yourself....

I'm guessing when an amp goes..it's not always an identical set of symptoms?

If it wasnt for Clan and Mollusc..my Mint 940 Sports edition Estate was going to be scrapped...the vultures were already cicling for the Galaxy wheels etc etc..I went to Volvo..and to a local Independant Volvo Specialist...neither had a clue..in fact they both seemed to know so little..it was scary....

I shall always ask these guy's from now on...oh..and hanks once more to them...you saved a great car my friends.

J

What engine code is your car? If its a B230k it might be worth checking the renix unit. I had a similar problem with a B230k engined 240 and thats what it turned out to be. As far as I understand It sets the ignition timing. These units are only fitted to B230k cars and some 300 series cars. I would check your ignition module first as That will be a comparatively cheep fix. I may have a spare renix unit in my hoard of bits. I will look it out just incase the ignition amp theory doesn't work. The only person I know who could explain Renix properly to me is classic swede, the 120 register keeper. Might be worth contacting him.

The 740 B230K uses a Bosch EZ-118K ECU.
