i had my pump timing done about 5000 miles ago and apparently it was a long way out.
I have also been advised that my cam timing is slightly out and that this should be done soon plus new belt/tensioners. However the car seems to have gone very noisy and smokey and a lot of vibration through the engine in the last week. I had a new genuine Volvo top engine mount fitted just before christmas which stopped the vibration a lot, but it has come back with a vengeance. Was the 850 diesel installation a noisy vibration prone fitment or can a diesel engine be really rough and still be ok to drive? Can cam timing be out and yet still be OK to use? My Volvo specialist says its absolutely fine to use but should be done sooner rather than later. At a cost of a round £400! It uses no oil and returns me 39 mpg Thanks |

If it's gone like that in a week I'd get it looked at ASAP before it goes bang.
It could be that you've moved a tooth on the timeing belt if it's due changeing and its throwing the timing out enough to run rough but not contact anything yet. Mine runs nice and smooth with 187k miles and I average 42mpg with nearly 50 on a run. |

These engine seem very sensitive to timing, s I doubt its jumped a tooth, although, anything "not normal" and viberating should be investigated. Noise and smoke would suggest to me possibility a faulty injector
But its hard to see without actually seeing the car £400 to fit timing belts???? I'd have thought £200 would be plenty!! Even in a main dealer

On an 850TDi, I've done it twice recently, and its no more difficult than doing the petrol engines
For £400 I would quite happily get a ferry over and do the job myself

if top engine mount made a difference, maybe you should also check the firewall mount, and also front center mount on the gearbox
i had noise/vibration problems because of those along with the top engine one

I get about the same MPG, but have noticed that this engine is smokey by nature anyway, and the engine is a tad clattery at tickover. 2000 rpms and you hardly notice it.

Do you have the crankshaft pulley clamp tool? How do you loosen (and angle tighten) the v. tight crank bolt? Just wondering as many have struggled with this.

Loosened with an air gun, tightened with 5th gear and a big bar, been doing this on any Volvo / car for over 15 years, and never had a problem yet, there is absolutely no need for a bolt like that to be tightened to over 200lbs or what ever it is. A drop of thread lock ensures it won't come out
