Hmmm, have exactly the same problem on my '56 S40 SE D 2.0l, 43,000 miles. Clutch bites about 1 inch from the floor & very difficult to make a 'quick' gear change. Also catches me out sometimes & I 'grind' the box if my foot isn't right down to the floor. My mechanic (independent, but Volvo specialist) has greased the linkage etc & thinks the only thing could be the master cylinder. Got it from Kings in Halesworth as an ex courtesy car about 18 months ago & has always been like it. Seems to have been treated well & I wonder if a good 'ragging' might help...will give it a go & hope nothing goes twang lol

If it reassures you, I violently engaged my clutch a couple of times and now its almost perfect. Gear changes are much more fluid and its stopped "catching" when moving the gearstick. Also engine braking is now very smooth.

Who'd have thought taking the "hit it with a hammer" approach would cure it!!!!!!!

As in dumping the clutch with wheelspin and all, or slipping the clutch for distance with plenty of rpm?

As in driving normally and whipping my foot off the clutch very quickly so that it engages its self hard, seems to have done the trick!

Prior to this the cutch wasnt realising properly and the gears would lightly crunch unless the clutch pedal was 100% flat to the floor. Gearchanges are now smooth as a baby's arse.

Thanks for the reassurance Fenton jd...will be giving it a go on Sat morning on my way to work. I share a lift with a mate so that should wake him up lol. How ironic that I've been trying to treat it gently & with respect all this time!!!

Well, 5 o'clock this morning my clutch got the thrashing of it's life lol...well 3500 rpm & dropped the clutch, 3 times. I must say I didn't like doing it but it does seem to have worked...the clutch 'bite' is still very low but actual gear changes are smooth & easy...lush. Thanks everyone

Just to say...

If I remember correctly, Marc at the 'the garage' told me about the glazed clutch I thing (was a while back now!)

so you have him to thank www.the-garage.co.uk
