it's manual, fwd. Even driving all the way to italy (from the netherlands) doing 60 to 75mph it only averaged 30mpg.

It's more economic to drive in the city than it is on the highway!

I cleaned the MAF, tried to clean the EGR, but it's too complex to remove on this engine. SO I used a bottle of Wynn's EGR3 cleaner (but only 2 days ago, and I'm not sure but it might have helped a bit)

It's going to the shop in 2 days, hope they can sort it out.

If they find anything, I'll post it here.
Car to the shop was posponed, it went last week. Jusr prior to that MPG got really rediculous.

They found (and why didn't I look myself, I know, the airfiler looked clean so I did not touch it) more than an inch of leaves on the bottom of the airfilter housing!! Dunno how those got there. REmoved it of course. MPG seems better. I'll report what the numbers are after I empty another tank of diesel. Kiijs promissing, but I've been let down before.

Default POS car

This car is driving me up the walls!

It ran fine for 4 days. MPG seemed ok.Today on the exact same route as everyday, it started to drink diesel again like it's for free. Same route same speed. yesterday 5liter/100km today 10liter/100km.

average is now about 20mpg over the last 250miles

I'm really starting to hate this POS. really regret not having bougth a T5

Did you ever get to the bottom of the fuel consumption problems?

Get the diagnostic codes read. Appears intermittent and may be its stored a code to give you an indication where to start...unless someone is syphoning the tank?

I have tried all the tips on the hypermileing sites on my auto T5 with little measureable effect but works great on a manual D5.
I'm writing to inform you that the consumption on my car appears to be far greater than advertised from the official figures quoted prior to the sale.

My car has now clocked up over 8000 miles and up to November last year I was commuting 150 miles daily, most of which was completed on the M5. At best I managed to reach 40.1 mpg, but usually it was around the 39.6 mark. So for the 1st 7000 miles I was commuting this long distance and only managing 39+ mpg

I have allowed for the engine to run-in however, now that I am not using the car to commute to work the average consumption according to the on-board computer is below 36 MPG.

Given that my partner and I do not drive the vehicle hard I feel the consumption is beyond what I think is acceptable. The figures should be:

34.5 Urban
58.9 Extra Urban
46.3 Combined

My relations have a 2002 2.4 V70 auto and they are averaging around the 46mpg mark.

Perhaps this is not an isolated case and there are other owners with similar consumption rates.

from what I have read and experienced the URBAN figure is the approx average MPG you are likely to achieve under normal everyday driving conditions. This applies to all Volvo models, if buying a Volvo look at the URBAN figure and it won't be far off. All the other figs are fictitious and only achievable under special circumstances. No doubt this will provoke a torrent of abuse !

I can achieve 45mpg momentarily, but only at a cruise controlled 55mph, not a chance at 68, let alone average it. V70 AWD GT D5.
One more piece of evidence I need to solve whatever problem I am having... Now at 29.5mpg on the dash (yes, the wife is doing short runs, but I am thinking I could run a V70 R above 24mpg, which would probably mean it is equaly 'expensive' to run (and more fun!) due to the way Dutch roadtax* works).

Roadtax is 1000€ less for an R (1900€ vs. 900€)
15000km a year = 1500 liters of Diesel = 2115€
15000km a year = 1875 liters of Petrol = 3168€
Difference is 1050€, so the R is about 50€ a year more expensive, and the difference between diesel and petrol is getting less and less (32ct to 29ct in the last year, now economy is getting better and more transport is being done by trucks, this may go back to 20ct that it used to be a few years ago).

That's it, I want an R!!!!! (or switch to LPG...)
