Default Mixing up 1st and reverse

Hi there

New to Volvos and have a 2004 V50 2.0D (6 speed manual box) with 65k and FVSH one prior owner from new. Car was very well cared for and I am really very happy with this car but for one annoying thing. I keep getting reverse when trying to get 1st or visa versa especially when coming out of one of these gears and looking for the other.

Is this a common problem and/or does it have a simple fix. What is the fix?

Thanks!

This detent has been modified twice now leaving 3 different systems , with yours you press down on the lever to allow it to move across for R dont you ? The second version added a beep when you selected R doing the same thing ... only the late versions let you move the lever across directly to R without pressing the lever down but the spring is stronger .

Mine was an 05 plate and you only had to move it across when then up after the beep.

Noticable effort was required to select R.

To get reverse, I have to push the stick down first, I think. Well, I don't think about it, it goes automatically. Mixing the two is nigh on impossible, though, never happened to me. Maybe they've changed the design between 2004 and 2010, or maybe the locking function on your box is broken?

i hate the ones where you need to put is all th way over to the left then put it into first, then half the time like in BMWs, it put it straight back into reverse, and often into first when it hink ive got reverse.

Ford used a similar throw it over and up gate on their 6 speed diesels upto about 2005, then moved to the lift reverse. We had a few customer where there was no difference in feel to going into first or reverse, as in, you do the motion but it was 50/50 you have your desired gears, they eventually turned out to be worn clutches. dont know why they dont use the same selector as the STs, the T5s where you sling it right over and into 6th

worth checking the control cables are secure above the gearbox, they are held in with blue locking tabs, these are sometimes lost if a new clutch is fitted and the cables become loose.

if i rest the weight of my fore arm while changing gear my gear lever goes down which would enable reverse to be selected , so i may have the same problem , it does not bother me i just dont put too much weight on it
