Wheel question - offset?
I have an S60 with 17" Thors on them. I have just bought some used 17" Tuscanas from a newer S60. The garage I asked to fit them has just called me to say that they dont fit.
2 hours ago I knew nothing about wheel sizes, after some googling I think I know what is going on, but I wanted someone to confirm it. both have a stud pattern of 5 x 108mm so they should physically fit. The Thors have an offset of about ET38 (need to check this) The Tuscanas have an offset of ET47 Can I simply get 4 10mm spacers? If I do, will I need longer bolts, or is there enough slack in the existing ones to cope with the extra 10mm? Cheers -- Phil

The Volvo site shows that both Thor 7.5 x 17" wheels and Tucana 7.5 x 17" wheels have an offset of 49 mm. And the site states the two fit the 2004 S60 and take the same size tyre for the S60, in EU 225/45-17. Did the shop try the Tucana and determine that they don't fit, or did they use some sort of database which does not list Tucana as fitting? It looks like Tucana is prepared for self supporting tyres (SST), but the Thor is not. Could this be the problem? Last edited by Jim314; Mar 24th, 2011 at 12:00. Reason: Spelling correction |

Thanks Jim, that makes some excellent reading. I never knew about that site.
I think I will try a different garage and stand over them while they check the fitting. Thanks again -- Phil

Are you sure these are genuine Volvo wheels? I think there are a lot of copies out there which might not have the same specifications as the genuine Volvo wheels. Some of these copies might have a different offset, a different hub hole diameter, or just a different design on the back side that could interfere with the Volvo brake components.

They were bought from ebay and listed as genuine Volvo wheels. Any ideas how I could tell?

Is it just the wheel seeming tight to go on to the center hub, these are a very close fit hole and can lead you to think the wheel won't fit but they do go on - Mike

Just got back from a different garage, Mike, you are bang on, the hub seems too large for the wheel. We used a measuring gauge and it is at least a 2mm difference. The guy was convinced that the wheel would not fit. Is this a known issue? Is there anything I can do to convince it to go on?
To answer other questions, genuine Volvo part, and the offset is the same on both ET49 (!) Cheers -- Phil

Firstly if the hub has a locating pin fitted to it make sure that it is sat in a position where the wheel has a recess for it for it to fit as this can make it difficult.
Have you measured the hole in the wheel at the inboard side (where it butts up to the hub) rather than the outboard diameter (the face you see when looking at the wheel stood next to the car) If this apperture is indeed 2MM or more smaller than it needs to be you could get the wheel machined to suit but this would indicate the newer S60 had a larger diameter center boss than your car. Another check I would undertake is to measure the diameter of the hole in the Thor wheel as a comparison to the newer wheels - Mike |
