manual for 740 Estate?
Greetings!
I'm now the proud owner of a 1989 740GL (Well, there's some debate with my better half over who really owns it!) and rather thrilled with it. SUffering a little from agrophobia having traded up from a corsa, but I'll live! Anyway, I'm a mechanical numptie, but would still feel more comfortable with a manual to flick through. Is there somewhere I can download one? Can volvo provide me with one? Any clues much appreciated. While I'm on, what's the deal with modification to a push-button start? I had a bit of a wander round ebay before buying mine, and saw that a few of this age have had this mod. Any (layman's terms only, please!) reason why ignitions don't seem to last on a 740, and why they don't just have the ignition fixed properly? |

manual for 740 Estate
Hello and welcome to our happy world of VOLVO.
A manual - try the HAYNES manual for this model (Haynes code no. 1258). This can be bought from Halfords or similar factors, Amazon books and of course eBay. eBay will be the cheapest source but if you want one with only your own dirty finger marks on then its off to the book shop. Prices varyu up to £14.00. The Haynes book is quite good (duck) for most things but can be somewhat poor on wiring diagrams - from the size of the components and text. They do try to get too much on a single page. If you want proper VOLVO garage manuals these are available from the dealers but sit down before you ask the price - and how many different ones you will need. These are loving described as 'The Green Books' simply because the covers are green. Can't help on the starter button thing - I have nevber had a 740, only 760s (from the 7-series) and I have never had an ignition switch problem with any of my Volvos. Any problems, just come on here and ask. There are many very helpful souls around - as I have found to my benefit over the years.

Howdo.
About the ignition key thing, I had my '87 740 GLE Auto Estate for 5 years and never had a whiff of a prob with that; distributor, yes; auto box, yes; ignition key, no. Of course that's only my personal experience, but I don't recall this cropping up on the forum, either; however I'm sure there are a million and one 740 owners with that particular problem who will correct me if that's not the case. Try e-chatting with Peter, the register keeper. Good luck and best regards, Nick H. |
