I did mine last weekend with over 3/4 tank of fuel and only lost a cupful of fuel. It was tight to get off but shifted easily with a good strap wrench (Sealey tools do a very good one with a swivel handle for about £7). Putting it back on felt as if it was cross threaded as it only turned about 1 1/2 turns before coming tight, but I realised that it was the top of the housing coming into contact with the rubber O ring. Once the ring had entered the housing, it all turned smoothly until the stop. I was careful not to tighten it too much, and only gave it a slight "nip".
I don't think that any silicone lubricant would help, as everything is lubricated by the diesel that was spilt when it was taken to bits!
