According to my 240 Owner's manual, front day running lights are 21/5W.

They are a very cold, almost bluish light.

Just a thought and we had this on early XJ40 Jags, are your number plate lights working? Always one that were missed and would always cause numerous headaches for the owner as all the obvious lights were working and we would get the cars and have them fixed in minutes.

just noticed something odd about my bulb warning light ,my DRL's have started working all the time which i discovered worked when you quickly switched on the lights several times so i guess there's dirt and grime on the switch leaves or contacts.
strangely tonight the bulb warning came on ,i had a wander round but all the lights were fine but switching off then on again it went off. It did the exact same thing on starting later and quickly switching off and on cured it again.
its usually the nearside running light which def needs its spring contacts cleaning but on this occasion it was fine!

i think i need to investigate the light switch and spray some contact cleaner in as an experiment

Default bulb failure warning light

I have had the same problem: bulb failure warning light on permanently, although all lights working properly.

my cure was to dry out the bulb failure warning unit, below the glove box, by putting it on a radiator in the house for a couple of days

On 79 models at least, the headlights are wired THROUGH the reed relay - I discovered this by accident as the L.H. indicators set the warning off, so I unplugged the relay and, that night, discovered I had no headlamps.

I thought all the protected circuits were in series with the reed relays in the unit, so unplugging it should stop all the protected lights from working.

That's what I thought - but unplugging the relay left the indicators working - I got flagged down by a cop in Sheffield who asked why I was driving on sidelights after dark, which is why I put the previous post up!

According to my handbook the failure device only monitors dipped beams, tail lights and brake lights.
