1999 Volvo S40 Engine Cutting Out
I have a 1999 S40 which I bought a year ago and have had no problems with it until now. When I am driving and then stopping at a give way, traffic lights or slowing down for a corner my vehicles engine just cuts out. |Was happening now and agin but becoming almost regular at every junction! The car starts immediately with a turn of the key so I really don't have a clue whats going on.
Anyone else experienced anything like this? I have it booked in for a diagnostic test (non-volvo franchised garage) at an auto elcetrician garage but have the horrible feeling they won't find anything or else they will try and rip me off. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I once had a car a bit similar to your problem, fine why running but when I stopped it would stall.
I do not know if it is the same but I found that the floats in my carb had collapsed and it would flood when not in use. (It was not a Volvo car at that time.) |

RE: 1999 Volvo S40 Engine Cutting Out
ah the good old days! if only things were that simple today :-(
this problem could be caused by a number of things. most commonly either a dirty throttle body or possibly an air mass meter. it would be a good idea to clean out the throttle housing anyway as it's amazing how carboned up they get after a relatively short time. see if that makes any difference and if not you need to have the fault codes read. that should hopefully point to any other possible culprits. |

RE: 1999 Volvo S40 Engine Cutting Out
Is it one of the Turbo S40s, if so it could be a vacuum seal leak?
I had this on my T4. There was a slight hole on one of the hoses. Connecting up to diagnostic equip won't detect this Cheers |

Mine does it occasionally but the circumstances vary, (both hot and cold) and it's not often enough to be irritatingly let alone annoying. When it's next serviced I'll mention it - if I remember.

I've seen this problem now on a few threads. Has anyone actually had this problem and diagnosed the faults. There doesnt seem to be anything conclusive yet.
I have a vehicle doing exactly the same - cutting out at the lights or when coming to a stop etc... |
