Default Wheels and Tires for winter driving S60R

Does anyone have a recommendation for snow tires and wheels for my 2005 S60R, 6 speed. We got a good snow yesterday in Boston and I took the car out to try it in the snow. All wheel drive was fine but braking was trully unsafe. I have a '98 S70 T5 that came with four mounted snows on steel wheels and handing is very good with them on. My thought is if I am going to buy snows I should get steel wheels as well--why bend an alloy wheel on a Boston winter pot hole? Do I have to stay with 18" wheels or can I go down to 17" or less? Your advice is very much appreciated.

the thinner the wheel and tire combo the better

it cuts through the snow that way

my 740 handbook has tire recommendations for snow/swedish winter driving, have you looked in your handbook? may be worth a shot ?

We only get a few days of snow in the UK each year so there may not be many people who can help you with this question.

All though I haven't tried them myself I have heard good things about Michelin Alpin 2nd Generation tyres and also Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme. I think it's like most things you take pot luck and hope for the best. Unfortunately I doubt many people bother changing them in the UK so it is harder to get alternative opinions.

I've got Continental WinterContact TS790's in 205/55-16. They're one of the best winter / snow tyres avaliable and have the "snow on the mountain" symbol meaning they meet the requirements of snow tyres for driving in Canada (which is nice?).

You *may* be able to get 16" but may be limited by brake clearance, so 17" is probably needed.

You'll be looking at about £100ish per corner for the tyres I suspect, and factor in a second set of wheels.

Thanks to all of you for responding. I totally forgot about the size of the brakes on the S60R! I am sure that is why VolvoT5 is right about needing at least 17" wheels.
