what i notice a lot is people at a side turning waiting to come out , you see their front wheel turn a bit then stop , ie they decide to pull out in front of you then decide not to after they see and comprehend your lights ...

hmm i know where you're coming from but i think it's debatable depends on the driver waiting, i think there must be a lot of hotheads round here who can't wait to pull out and get in front of you DRL'S OR NOT.

So can anyone please tell me if it's possible to turn off the headlights from DRL and leave the side lights on?

I flick my Smart's and Elise's (both dark colours) headlights on when I drive through our local woodland, which is dense and dingy even in the daytime in summer, and I know for a fact that I am less likely to get pulled out on as a result.

I know we are all different and have our own tastes, but could someone who wishes to have their DRL turned off tell me why so??

There is no doubt that your car is certainly more "visible" with it on.
The way I see it,it should be about risk assessment. If my car is more visible to oncoming traffic , sure it reduces the risk of a misjudgement by the that driver.

Imagine yourself in your car after a hard day at work, whilst you are not asleep at the wheel, there is no doubt that even slight tiredness can affect your judgement a little. The DRL for me should be compulsory on all cars.

I cannot fathom why anyone wants the turned off on their car.

Here here ,
A common reason is bulbs forever blowing , but if proper long life volvo bulbs are used it isnt a problem , they last about 18 months on average sometimes a lot longer .

The Bi-Xenon bulbs last around 7 years on average so a long time to go for you .. that's with them on all the time as day running lights . Now if you replace them with cheap non volvo bulbs they last around 2 winter seasons .
