Default K&N on a Diesel ?

Hi. I'm sure this has been covered several times before but even using the search option I couldn't find what I was looking for.

What is the general opinion of using a K&N (or similar hi flow) air filter on a Turbo Diesel (a V40 115hp in this case) ?

Thankyou for your time.

Michael

I bought one for my S80 TDI, not sure it's made a different but in the long run it's cheaper
There are some cheap ones on ebay (where I got mine), looks like the bloke buys them from Eurocarparts (with a huge discount, cost me thirty odd pounds) with the auction bidders address as the shipping destination. Still cheaper than buying direct from Euro!

Anything that offers improved airflow can't be a bad thing, even for a diesel.

There are no proven benefits of the K&N air filter. Just use the stock set-up.

IMO would not bother. I bought a K & N filter off ebay. Fitted fine but after running for about 1K miles the MAF started to throw up errors. These K & N filters rely on a fine mesh which is covered in a fine oil to trap crap. Mine was very heavily oiled out of the box, and i have a feeling this oil coated the thin wire in my MAF (mass airflow filter) causing the errors.

I very carefully cleaned the MAF and stuck a new volvo filter in - no noticeable difference in performance and no errors.

The car is designed to use stock filters and they are actually pretty darn good at doing their job!

Oh if any of you really want to try the K & N - pm me and i will send you mine to try for a few beer tokens (2003 s60 D5)

I fitted one and did notice an improvement. The engine was more responsive and acceleration improved. It flies. Lots of miles and no probs - so far. However I always heed the advice and experience of others and will look out for any negatives.
