Rear axle speedo pickup.
Evening all, heres a little question for all you fantastic experts out there.
Did volvo change the plug in the back of the axle very often? The speedo pickup one. I am about to fit a different axle to my 740GLE H reg with one from a 940 SE turbo J reg. I am aware how there are so many different combinations on the 240 axles so was wondering if volvo did similare on the 740 940 cars. I seem to remember in my dodgy memory that some early cars had different instrument heads as if your fuel guage is not working there are two different kinds.Could this also be true of the speedo setup. All suggestions welcome. I will obviously try looking and comparing the two side by side but if the pickup rings are different then I won't know until all is bolted up.A bit late by then. Regards Brian. |

Are you changing ratios?

Hi yes I think the ratios are different.I suppose the amount of teeth on the pickup ring will be different?
I intended counting them before the swap but thought I would see if there were a miriad of different connectors as in the 240 axles first. I do have the speedo from the 940 but no doubt everything on that will be different as well.I know the dimmer control is sited in a different place. Maybe I should look into servicing the old diff. It must be pretty shot as it whines all the time but more when accellerating. Any help much appreciated. Regards Brian. |

The toothed ring or tone ring as I think it's called should be the same regardless of the ratio. For most of the time it will be spinning at wheel speed.
I have read that some cars are different, I think if the cars have ABS it might affect things. Fitting a non ABS one might mean the ABS will not work. This is something I remember reading about, might have been on turbobricks. I tend to read up on a subject when doing something but after a while it all gets a bit mixed up. |

Thanks steve, luckily both cars are not fitted with ABS.I will get the pickup unit out and have a go counting the teeth on the tone ring thats if I can see them and if I can mark one, good old tippex never lets me down.
Actually the biggest hurdle is actually lifting the darn thing,If ever you have to pick one up then be prepared they are a dead weight.I'm no weakling and I do manual work day in and day out so carrying slabs and heavy pipes etc is a daily deal. But the other night I was playing about trying to get the ratios and I thought it was stuck in the ground? I only wanted to get the hub off the ground Lol. AS FOR MIXING THINGS UP TELL ME ABOUT IT! I nearly invented the "stickit note"years ago as my memory is written on scraps of paper cigarette paper holders baccie pouches and anything that you can write on.Flippin shame I didn't standardise the notes and put some glue on them. One day my son I'll be a millionaire. Thanks Brian. |

I changed to a lower axle ratio (and axle) a few years ago and the police keep telling me my speedometer is still accurate, so you should be alright.
