Default Looking to buy high (?) mileage S60

Quick question, but maybe some long answers.....

I'm looking at S60 D5 geartronics, say 2006/7 at about 50/60/70k miles on the clock - good idea or not? Is this the sort of mileage where bills could start to come up?

Most of via the Volvo Selekt scheme - any comments on that?

Thanks in advance.

70,000 miles is not a lot for a D5 if it has been regularly maintained. Even the 5 cylinder petrol engines will do in excess of 250,000 miles without major problem if looked after.

A 2006 or later D5 will have a DPF, familiarise yourself (google) with the implications of that. Essentially, it means the car's only suitable for you if you regularly do journeys of decent length, i.e. a good half hour or so at 50mph plus, for every 300-400 miles use. Even then, some components such as the DPF itself have yet to prove themselves when it comes to high-milers.

But even if the DPF doesn't worry you, I'd personally recommend a petrol car of that age. They're cheaper to buy, silky smooth, and whisper-quiet. The diesels, in contrast, are... well, they're diesels, with all the clatter and coarseness it implies.

I speak from experience, having recently traded in a 2.4D against a 2.0t, and Wow! what an improvement in refinement!

As Bill 56 says, the 55-reg 185 bhp diesels can have DPF problems if used constantly as shopping trolleys etc with high miles, but my 55reg V70 D5 has done over 117000 miles in total and had to have the DPF re-generated by a Volvo dealer before I aquired the car. Its done 6,000+ miles since I bought it without any DPF problem and I get an average of 41.5 mpg at present, compared to less than 30mpg from my previous 2319cc T5 petrol V70. Its noisier than the petrol model but only from cold, and when driving, there isnt much noticable difference after the engine warms up.
