rumble at idle
Hello all, I am new to volvo and bought a new xc60 before christmas and love it to bits apart from one gremlin.
I had a saab previouly and it was in the garage around 30 time over 18months for various engine and vibration problems so very sensative to motoring at the moment. I seem to be getting a stammer or searching effect at idle (720 ish rpm) more so when it is warm and in heavy traffic. Is this normal for a new 205bhp d5 and is my saab experience still haunting me and making me find problems that are just deisel engine norms. I did read about noisy d5 engines before buying th car but on test drive didnt notice anything! Had the garage look at on 3000mile saftey check and he said it was particle filter cleaning iteself but its happening on all journeys! Help me enjoy motoring again! |

think it could also be the duel mass flywheel they can cause a rumbling/vibrating effect. Stu

Thanks guys will check the alternator belt. Its not really a noise but more a vibration with peaks and troughs. Did you solve it on your S60?
Seems to be more pronouced in hot weather. How would the dual mass fly wheel cuase this, sorry not very technical aware with cars. Can it be sorted or is this the nature of the D5? Been to three separate garages and all say normal and usual fobbing off! Is it worth me pushing further! |

Hi
The alternator belt would viabrate making a noise inside the car on tickover whilst driving along there was no noise you can actuly see the belt vibrate when on tick over. It cost £80 to have a new pulley fitted and it sorted the noise. I would ask at a local alternator refurb first though. This was just my experience and it worked |

Hi Richard,
I seem to have the same problem with my S60 D5 as you describe above. The auxilary belt vibrates significantly as it runs between the power steering pump and the air conditioning pump with attendant rumble which fades as the engine revs are increased. You say that you had the pulley/clutch on the alternator replaced - I'm not aware that the alternator has a clutch - was it the pulley/clutch on the air conditioning pump that was replaced? If so, do you know whether this can be done with the pump in situ and connected or did it need to be removed? |

You were quite right it was the alternator pulley/clutch. Replaced it and problem solved.
