Auto gear lever button broken!!
I will do a thorough forum search but thought i'd ask in case someone is online right now who knows...
The button on my auto box gear lever (the one that needs to be squeezed to change position) has always stuck out a little more than I thought it should. It has now "sprung" right open and seems to have detached/snapped. Now it doesn't always work! I thought I was stuck today 60 miles from home but I persuaded it to come out of park into drive! Anyone had this issue? .......know how the button works? .......know how the gear lever comes apart? .......know which parts can be replaced or how much they cost? Thanks in advance.... i'll have a fiddle myself in the morning and ideally avoid a trip to a dealers! |

I usec to have an old jag xj6 which did this, and as you say took some time and stripped it apart to find it was the spring being slowly pushed over the rod it was connected to.
Knowing its not the answer, am sure with an allen key you will come across the grub screw keeping it all in place etc... |

Hi Raife, it's not exactly as your problem, but it might give you an idea of what's underneath the actual lever. I believe the lever itself should come off fairly easy, as it's an 'accessory' item?!

Thanks for the ideas guys, I appreciate it.
I stripped it today and found the interior of the button was all cracked and split. No easy long term fix so I plumped for a new knob. Such a small amount of plastic, button and rod for the ridiculous amount of £103!!! Fixed though and thats what matters. |

Sorted, any chance of a quick right up for getting it off?

No problems,
The trim surrounding the gear lever (with the gear numbers on etc) just levers out from the back side. I did this by lifting the cup holder lid and going in from that area. The whole lot of this lifts up. You need to pull the knob up at the ssame time. The gaiter/knob and trim all come up together but you need to be careful as there are two licourice lace wires attached. Not a very clear write up but once the trim is levered up its all pretty obvious. Lovely to have a new knob in my hand!! Last edited by raife; Aug 3rd, 2011 at 22:13. |
