Next weekend.....anyone up for it?
Hi all,
was just wondering if there were any how2's on this forum? on Vec-C forum there was a dedicated section so was just wondering... Does anyone know how easy it is to do the cambelt on a Volvo V40 1.9D 2002 at all? Also is it worth doing the water pump at the same time? Also.....what oil does my car take? Is it 10W 40? Anyone local to Reading fancy giving me a hand servicing the motor next weekend at all? Can get aload of Pizza's in etc. for food Thanks all |

Miles away from redding, but word of advice if you are going to buy some oil, DO NOT buy any of that cheap halfruads crap. Go for some semi or full synthetic stuff from Mobil or Castrol if you can.
A friend recently thought he should save that extra £20 and buy the cheapest crap on the shelf and a couple of days began crying over the phone at his horrible performance and louder engine. He thought he broke something in the process so to stop the crying I stole his credit card and bought some full synthetic Castrol from the local parts store for £49.99 (had to get an extra 1 litre bottle, got a discount, yaa!) and his motor now runs smoother then ever, and quiter too. Just my 2 pence.

for a Cambelt change you just need size 14 or 16(I think) spanner or socket, put that around belt tensioner and move it clockwise, with other hand remove that belt. Install in reverse order
Note that you might need a to remove right front tyre to get an access to crankshaft pulley. And you might need to get an extension to extend that spaner's lenght( it will be easier to release a tensions from that tensioner)

Be sure to buy a good quality belt, either genuine Volvo or a Gates - Gates technical bulletin (PDF) - Don't waste your hard earned on lesser quality parts. Being a Renault derived unit I'd change the water pump unless you have documented evidence that it has been done at the last belt change. In saying that...I'd change it anyway.

Hey up,
I did this on mine about three weeks ago. Perfectly achievable with a good basic tool kit. An air gun isn't a bad idea though. Oh, some locking pins will help as well. About £15 from laser. Make sure you change the belt, tensioner and the water pump. Also do the aux belt if it's not been done for a while. The laguna haynes manual will help as well. Make sure you have tippex before you start! The guide the guys have suggested helped me no end, great it was! Many Thanks, Daniel |
