Looking at a diesel
Hi all, i'm thinking about buying a 99 S70 2.5TD.
Its got 170,000 miles, 1 owner and 11 service stamps. I'm a petrol car man so is there anything in particular i should check for when buying this car? Thanks Ewan

Ewan me old mate, as you know I have recently bought an S80 (Same Engine D5252T) & I can highly reccomend them VERY VERY "Nice" on fuel Consumption I'm getting high 30's to low 40's round town & the Engine is as Sweet as a nut,
With regards to what to look for I have noted that the Fuel Injection Pump is prone to Slippage (Especially after a Cam Belt Change) it would seem that after EVERY cam Belt change the Injection pump MUST be re-Set to provide GOOD STARTING of the Engine. Once started the engine will run fine (due to its "Dynamic Timing") but on start up it does rely on "Static Timing" & this is where the setting of the Injection pump is VITAL........... I had my S80 in today for "Bad Starting" & on inspection it was running at "Injector Angle" of 52 degrees (it SHOULD BE 0 Degrees) + or - 2 Degrees .... "Offset" timing will also cause it to Smoke Badly during Cranking ( if the one your looking at does this IT IS a VERY SIMPLE FIX (with the help of a proper Code reader/diagnostic tool) On the PLUS SIDE if when you look at it (To Buy) & it does Smoke it may be a way to get the asking price reduced... PM me if you need any more info or Help Keith

what keith said plus check when the cambelt was changed and water pump. these engines are renowned for leaking water pumps. seized bearing belt comes off or is snapped head buggered.apart from that very good engines.there is no generic code reader that will read this car the engine manegement system is MSA15.8 volvo, indi or bosch. the dynamic pump timing can only be done with either volvo , bosch and has to be set with the engine running.

I've just done the belt on my 850, is it a similar job to do?
