740 rear window
Hi
Having decided to keep my 'cheap buy' 740 TD saloon - it clanks a little but is otherwise a surprisingly good car - I thought I'd treat it to a new front wing (badly rusted) and a bottom end respray, and have the rear window replaced as it has a large crack from side to side. It was cracked when I bought the car so claiming on my insurance is not possible on ethical grounds. No problem, say the replacement firms. However, quotes range from £500 to £800, which is about four times the value of the car! My next idea was to buy a cheap saloon locally (I know of an immaculate petrol one) and transfer the engine into it. This would be an attractive option, as it has a rustfree and dentfree body and leather upholstery, but Volvo owners insurance won't insure conversions so my insurance won't transfer over. As the engine type is part of the VIN these days it would be very dangerous to do the swap and not tell them, or any other insurers, as if there was a problem it would give them a perfect reason to withdraw cover. In any case I would have to rebuild the front suspension as it is stiffer on a diesel. So I'm back to plan A, though I may buy the car anyway for the upholstery and screen. If I do this, or can get a second hand screen, can anyone who has actually done this job on one of these cars tell me how to get one out? Haynes manual is no use at all. The normal answer is to use cheesewire, but will this method work with a screen as recessed as the 740 saloon? Thanks An increasingly frustrated John Davies |

Hi John,
Did you try any of your local Car Body repair people. Many of them have the tool to remove the "sealed in place " windows as for some body jobs, they need to remove and replace the sealed in windows ( such as when pulling the body on a rig ). If they remove the good screen from the donor car, you can remove the window from the 740TD. ( or they may give you a good price to change the window over if they are doing the lower half respray). You can put carton tape over all the inner and outer surfaces and then apply a force ( hammer ) to remove the old window ( if it is not a laminated type ). Use an old chisel / knife to remove all the old sealant. Reprotect the paint surface where the paint is removed. Use surface preperation and sealant bought from the body shop. Hope this helps. Don't car wash the car for a day after the window is fitted to allow screen to cure. ivor940 Last edited by ivor940; Mar 8th, 2006 at 13:54. |

Thanks for this - will do.
Failing that, I will buy some cheesewire and see where I go! John |

Hi
The quick and easy answer is, it seems is to buy the spare car, to change my insurer to one who accepts modified cars (£6 less than I am paying at the moment!) , change the engine, box, propshaft, front struts, exhaust, tank and part wiring harness, and bobs your auntie. About three or four days work but should make a good one and I will rather enjoy it. And most importantly, it will cost peanuts! John D |

Hi
Managed to buy the car - and oddly enough although it runs rough (a faulty MAF sensor, which doesn't bother me as I want to put a diesel engine in it) and the front suspension creaks (which again doesn't bother me as this will also have to be changed) it is otherwise aok - indeed, it is immaculate thoroughout. I will put up a post to let everyone know how I got on. Regards John Davies |
