Smile 945 steering column bearings

Hi all,
I suspect our '96 945 2.3 lpt 90 odd k is one that missed the "silent recall" of dodgey steering column bearings. You get an occaisional rumble\knocking sound which you can hear, partly through your fingers on the wheel - it is very faint. For some reason it's more noticeable in hot summer weather.I've found that if you unscrew the top cover of the column & drop in a drop of oil, where the shaft is,it normally stays silent for ages.
Basically, with our MOT coming up, I wanted to ask if this has been a problem for anyone? It's worth saying that the steering is otherwise perfect,as is the rest of the car.
With thanks,
Dave.

I have it too and considered to have it sorted but with parts @ 200+ I dais no way. It comes and goes, tend to happen when I go over a brow of a hill (ie frontend lift) and then turn, just a small click in the steering wheel. I have decided to leave it. Actually can not remember when it happaned last time...

Your car was missed on the recall. However if you wish to eliminate the sound from the steering column then you should replace the upper column bearing which was of faulty manufacturer. The later type is OK.

All the best, Peter.
