Rear brake pad change question
Looks like from what I've read that you don't have to remove the handbrake cable on an 03 S40 to get the caliper off. But I don't seem to have enough room to pull the caliper all the way out because the handbrake cable is tight. Any suggestions?? I can pull it almost out but not all the way, so I just put it back til I find out for sure. Do I need to pull it up a little harder??

first you need to slacken the hand brake cable nut,it's underneath the centre consol. Then remove both 12 mm bolts on the caliper,it is tight but will come off. Then change the brake pads, refit the caliper and then adjust the handbrake nut till there is 1/2 to 1mm of clearance between the lever and the lever stop on the caliper. Then and only then can the brake pedal be pressed,if it is pressed before the cable is adjusted then the handbrake performance won't be right.

I didnt need to touch the handbrake when I did my rear pads. I just undid the bleed nipple and screwed the piston back in.

Why do you have to open the bleed nipple to screw the piston back into the caliper? I need to replace the rear pads on my V40 soon so am interested in this thead.

Thanks for that information - and thanks to Paul as well for your message!
I didn't realise that muck could get passed back up through the ABS system and damage it. I did the front disks and pads the other week and pushed the piston on both sides back into the caliper a fair distance never thinking about the consequences. I'll do the rear pads and be a lot more careful about what I'm doing. |

Paul can you please send the e-mail again? My system has been down and my e-mail has been having errors, not allowing me to open any mail. |
