Default 2005 S40 2.0D Starting issue

Hi all, I'm new to this forum and have a 2005 S40 2.0D with starting issues. It's only got 32K miles on the clock and I've only owned it for just over a month. I have read this entire thread and feel that this could be the solution to my starting problem, however I would just like to confirm my symptoms and see if you agree.

When I bought it, it started quickly on first key turn, however on 2 occasions it rattled and farted and sounded like a bag of spanners, so I turned it off and on again where by it started and ran nicely so I put it down to the fact that I am used to petrol engines and I didn't crank it long enough (this is my first diesel). Any way over the last week or so the car takes between 5 and 10 seconds to start on the first turn of the key and on rare occasions I have to crank it twice. 2 days ago I started it but when I pressed the accelerator pedal initially nothing happened, but then I pressed it again and it revved up as it should. The starting issue occurs the worst for first start of the day or if the engine has cooled down significantly e.g. after being parked in works car park all day.

In my mind that would all point towards the throttle body sticking as previously suggested by Clan.

What are your views on this? I'm thinking that I will probably replace the throttle body anyway since its cheap enough but would like to hear what you think please.

Thanks in advance for your responses and help.

Cheers G.

replacing them is no longer the recommended option as new ones can stick too!
Remove the throttle and get some medium emery tape and partialy trap it between throttle flap and body and put the tape through , you will have to do this all round the edge of the flap quite a few times to make a small gap all around the throttle plate when closed . You can see the gap when you hold it up to the light and look through , this will be a guide as to where next to rub the emery tape .
Aim for the smallest gap you can and all around apart from where the spindle passes through . The final test is press the throttle closed with a thumb and there should be no tendancy to stick at all .

Thanks for the quick response Clan, I'll try and give this a go tomorrow, just out of curiosity what would you class as a medium emery? And where you say "Aim for the smallest gap you can and all around apart from where the spindle passes through" should I make a slightly bigger gap or slightly less/no gap here?

Cheers G.

medium grit abrasive emery tape not coarse , probably more fine than medium actualy .
When you look through the throttle when it is pressed shut you won't see any gap , that is why it is sticking , so aim for the smallest gap you can make all around .

It's funny you should say that. Mine periodically rattles and clatters on start up. It lasts a few seconds and goes away. Or as you said, shut it down and the problem goes away. I've never been able to reproduce it while the bonnets been up, it's frustrating. Anyone else had this?

Hope not, I changed the throttle body 5 weeks ago. It did it last week just after I'd come out of the car wash. Not sure if this is connected to it though. I've noticed sir bubbles in the fuel line, any possible connection?

I had the sticky throttle issue. When the engine was hot it'd start but it wouldn't rev and there'd be lots of smoke. Changed the throttle body and that went away.
