Comparing 25 cars, Volvo C30 on pictures numer 36 and 37. Comments: The low beam stresses the own side of the road and shows elongated, bright spots. Good: low stray light. In Sweden, the nights are long, but that's only noticeable on the high beam in the Volvo C30. |

Heres a reality check for anyone who believes the S40's headlights are fine:
ONE headlamp works on my mums 1999 W'reg Honda Accord. YET the light output from this single headlamp with a STOCK bulb is approx 20% brighter than TWO Philips Extreme Power 80%+ bulbs PUT TOGETHER in my S40! Absolutely appauling headlamp design there Volvo!!!!!! |

just wondering if there was any conclusion or feedback from Volvo UK...
I had the "pleasure" of driving my06 s40 this morning to Stansted airport and back and during whole trip on M11 I was quite amazed to see that pretty much every other car had better headlights (and I have fitted phillips +100% bulbs). can this be any worse? I love s40 - but cannot apprehend how on Earth volvo could miss such important feature like good headlights (low beam). as you guys say, driving at night is a risky business, not to mention driving in rain at night. few weeks ago I drove from Preston to London in rain at night (and I was honestly shocked). on unlit parts of m6 my nose was close to windscreen as only then I was able to see something on the road - not to mention that fiestas, 90s escorts and other cars were overtaking me as I was the slowest car on m6. really let down by low beam headlights on otherwise excellent car.

Volvo customer services contacted - thank you Harvey1512 for the e-mail address.
Copied below my e-mail message. The reply will also appear here. The oxygen of publicity can be an effective tool. Dear Volvo Customer Service, I am writing to alert you to the fact that your specific design of projector headlamp results is both ineffective and shockingly dangerous. I am the new owner of a single previous owner Volvo C70, registration number WF59ULR. I have struggled with the illumination provided by the dipped beam. I drive all over the country for my work and because of the distances involved, I have to drive many miles during the hours of darkness. I had asked my local Volvo dealer about the issue and they claim never to have heard of such a thing. They cited a single case that involved a Volvo XC90 and passed that off as an issue that had, within their collective knowledge, only affected a single car in all the years that they have been trading. I believe that they are not being entirely truthful. I joined the Volvo Owners Club Forum before purchasing my car and I was (subsequent to my purchase) rather surprised to see the large number of people who were complaining specifically about Volvo cars and their dangerous dipped beam illumination. This is clearly an issue that is not being addressed by Volvo. I have followed the advice of my local dealer and fitted Volvo long life H7 bulbs. The illumination may be marginally brighter but it is still completely unsafe to drive on dipped headlights at night. I have also had the dipped beams adjusted professionally and still the differences are rather marginal. My opinion is that the projector glass is poorly designed and makes a substantial contribution to impeding the light emitted from the H7 halogen bulb. I am concerned that a company of the stature of Volvo, with its world-wide reputation for car safety, is not addressing this issue (or is deliberately ignoring it) and I am currently looking at all of my options. The car is so unsafe to drive during the hours of darkness that I am now considering exchanging it after less than one month's ownership (despite the financial losses that it would incur) for something that is not terrifying to drive on dipped headlamps. I hope that the projector glass lenses can either be exchanged or removed. The local dealer did mention some lights that can be fitted when a car is newly ordered. The cost they quoted was £500 per side and £160 per bulb. They also told me that this is not an option for my car which is not newly ordered. I have no idea what this type of light is and wondered if fitting it as an after market purchase is an option. £1320 is a hefty price to pay for lights that actually illuminate something. I judge that my safety, the safety of my family and that of other innocent road users is too important to let this matter drop. I await your comments before taking any further action. You may find the following information useful for increasing the collective knowledge inside Volvo that many people are not happy with the dangerously low level of lighting provided by the projector type headlights supplied as standard fittings by Volvo. http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=86693

Also I think pointing Volvo UK to the owners club community may highlight issues we have with the range and what big company wants bad media press?
