if you pick the right cover, yes - that's exactly what you can get.
Pass the matches? Might need them in 3 years:-)

Very few do that after the 1st year which is the time limit on them agreeing to 'return to invoice' in the event of a total loss - I have only seen one that extended this to 3 years and it wasnt cheap. The rest simply provided the difference between the insurance payout and the purchase cost for a similar car with the same specification and same age. The reasoning is simply that you have massive depreciation after Year 1, plus wear and tear to account for.

I took the chance of not having it this time and I haven't needed it (thankfully ) as the car is now over 3 years old

yes, that's what most seem to cover - make up between what you paid and what the insurer gives you (Back to Invoice), or a replacement with same spec and similar mileage when your is totalled.
Have seen one, from Total Loss GAP, who will replace yours with an equivalent spec NEW car. Up to 5 years cover, and it wasn't the most expensive. Actually, it was the cheapest too.
You can spend the money, or take a chance, like most insurances. And most people DON'T claim. But the nicer the car, the more attractive it is to a thief, I suppose.

Thanks gents - buy that was in a way my question.

The purpose of fully comp insurance is to put you back in to the position you were before the incident (restitution). So, if your insurance company pays you e.g. 12k but you cant get a (discounted - nobody pays sticker price) replacement similar vehicle, they're in breach.

(I used to work for AXA - at that time, the only people with access to the Internet were claims handlers so they could check AutoTrader and other websites if someone complained we'd not paid out enough.)

I took out GAP for 4 years, which kicked in after the automatic first year GAP cover from the my regular fully comp insurer expired. Both were return to invoice and only had a ceiling on the maximum differential they would pay out on top of the total loss settlement from my standard car insurance. At the time there were 3 GAP products - one to cover any difference between the total loss value and any outstanding finance, one to cover the return to invoice value that you paid at new (so you could replace like for like only if you could get the same discount), or new vehicle replacement which would cover the cost difference to allow you to order a brand new car to equivalent spec, regardless of price change. I went for the second option so that I could decide what car I want to spend the money on, rather than be tied to the same vehicle.

Hope to never claim, but reassuring to me if I do end up in a total loss scenario.

Both Total Loss and ALA offer policies that will result in you being able to purchase a brand new car of the same specification (or as near as possible if the model has moved on over the years). Effectively placing you in the same position as you were on the day you collected your brand new car in the first place, uprated if your model's list price has increased by the time you make the claim.

I have five years GAP cover, to mirror the five year service and MOT cover pack that my dealer threw in free with the overall deal for my F-Pace. This seems the best moment to take stock and change the car if she is unreliable, not before. I will buy an annual warranty policy for the fourth and fifth years after the manufacturer warranty expires as these cars are too complex and expensive to run without a warranty (see today's thread on here from the Volvo owner whose geartronic box has failed).

Total Loss was cheaper than ALA. But all of my research showed me that ALA has a proven track record in great administration and dealing with claims. If you need to make a claim (let's hope not) then the last thing you want is your insurer squabbling with your GAP provider over settlement. And they do!

So by calling ALA and telling them about the Total Loss quote, they simply checked themselves online while I waited and offered to match Total Loss as well as offer a further 20% discount on the difference.

Did I take that offer from ALA? Yes I did!

£315 for five years cover on a car with a list price of £57,650 where the cover is to replace the loss with a brand new equivalent model. Money well spent but I never want to be in a place where a claim is needed.

Regards

Arianne

The RR Velar looks nice. Built on the same production line as the FPace.

Mrs A and I are beginning to think about life after the turtle. We're off to the Porsche & BMW dealerships in Edinburgh on Saturday.

Option 1: Porsche Macan Diesel S (V6 twin turbo 3.0 with double clutch PDK auto box). Mrs A says it ain't no thing of beauty, which might prove difficult to overcome.

Option 2: BMW X3 x-line 3.0d auto. Issue here is the upcoming revised 2017 model that can't yet be seen anywhere online or in the flesh. There's no way we're buying another car without test driving the exact engine spec etc - did that on the VEA D4 current XC60, results documented extensively elsewhere on this forum in a thread now buried in the mists of time.

Had briefly considered an XC60 D5 AWD but the model hasn't long to go and thereafter we can kiss goodbye to anything other than the soundtrack and experience of anything other than 4cyl turbos.

All opinion and feedback gratefully received. I'll update this thread after Saturday's two test drives and dealer experiences.
