Other than between the bolt end of the half-shaft and the bolt, there's nowhere TO fit a washer.

All they'll do is fit a new standard bolt - leaving you to think they've done you a massive favour by removing the half-shaft.

If you have a torque wrench, save yourself a day's carlessness and fit the bloody thing yourself in 2 minutes.

Do you need 4 bolts for the XC70? Are the torque settings the same front and rear?

It's funny how this post would appear now. I have just been through this with my dealer.

After owning my car for approx 2 months it started to make this clonking noise. The dealer said it wasn't covered with the used car warranty because they don't replace any parts to fix it. They said they would squirt some high pressure grease into the splined shafts to stop it at a cost of £92 + VAT.

'High pressure grease' what's that then ? sounds like BS to me.

Anyway contacted Volvo UK customer services they contacted dealer, dealer then did what Clan mentioned earlier on in this thread and put Loctite around the splined shafts FOC. Can't see this being a permanent fix though.

My dealer initailly refused to accept the XC90 fix, until i contacted Volvo UK who then duly authorised the repair as per my request

Default Great fix

Thanks to all the great info in this thread I have finally got rid of the clonking noise from the front of my S60 D5. Phoned and ordered the 2 XC90 bolts yesterday afternoon, picked them up this morning at 9:00, asked them to fit them, was out of the dealership 5 minutes later. No more clonking noises. Total cost £34.04 as mentioned previously for the bolts (!) and they fitted them for free.

The knowledge on this site never ceases to amaze me.

Chris.

Considering that the identical bolt without the rubber cone is just two quid inc. VAT - you're looking at 13 quid for a small piece of rubber.

But that's Volvo for ya.
I bought a 150 ml can of base coat spray paint and another of laquer : 11 quid ... which is seven times more expensive than my local motor factor.

Tell me why I'm driving a Volvo again ?

The Volvo aerosol paint, if you have ever used it is fantastic quality with the best spray nozzle i have used on an aerosol , and it lasts quite a while you can paint mirror covers as well as the factory finish assuming no dust .
You cant do that with a 78p aerosol , i've tried them all over the last 40 years ! Generaly you get what you pay for ...
