This problem is not exclusive to Volvo's, Most modern cars with the EGR system suffer from it.

from Vauxhall's to Mercs.

There is a spray cleaner that is sprayed directly into the air intake specifically designed to clean the inlet manifold, which will be just as clogged up as the EGR with black crud.

that why i have blocked my egr off and one day will remove the Inlet manifold cover and scrape it all off. from what i have seen it can be just as bad as the EGR !

Haven't got around to cleaning mine out yet as car is spending just about every moment on the Motorway.

Trouble is since mine is now sat almost exclusivly on the motorway it runs really smoothly & doesn't even puff any black sooty smoke when giving it some beans.

Thoughts ?

Seeing as it's such a beautiful day today, I thought it was high time I had a look at this EGR business on my 95k 2004 S60 D5....

...and I'm glad I did!

The large hose to the left of the EGR was caked with about a quarter of an inch of horribleness, as was the EGR itself, and there was barely 5mm of airflow space into the little intake thingy. My poor beast - it really can't be good for them to have so much crap kicking around!

After two cans of carb cleaner and roughly a mile of kitchen roll everything is looking spanking.

Took her out for a quick blast and immediately noticed a much smoother idle and I think the throttle response has improved slightly too. I can't yet comment on whether it has had any positive effect on fuel economy, but I'll be keeping a close eye on it over the next couple of weeks.

I'm mighty glad I took the time to do this - thanks OP

Hi did mine this morning 2003, 163, 76k on the clock. found it to be pretty bad 50% blocked the hole in the side was down to 6mm from about 25mm,
what i did notice in the pipe coming down from the head a little pool of oil is that normal? that pipe was also gunked up.

Mine was the same. I would expect oil to be present. Removed about an eggcupfull from the hose to the i/c last time. I do it every second year and it's never as bad as the first visit.

I did mine on the weekend after finding this extremely informative post. I was quite surprised to be honest as I was expecting it to be bad but was pleasantly surprised at the condition. (2002 D5 )It was a bit gunky and slimey just like the previous poster but at least now i know its done.

It is worth checking this link, as the egr valve block plate is looked into, tested, and fitted on the series one D5 engine.
