I also had the same problem when fitting a pair of 4.5" to the front of my estate. Found that they were 4" but the rears were 4.5". I wanted the plain rim rather than the safety bead type. Found that I also had tubes in so didn't need the valves I bought from Northants tyres. There are only 2 sizes and it's pot luck if a tyre place will have the larger ones. Best to try an old school place rather than the chains.

IIRC, the correct tyre valve is a TR415 - easily available on ebay.
Using the regular ones that you linked to, but with a washer sounds very dangerous!

ref the metal ones - why ? the washer would be topside not in the rim - the bottom side would need to fit right with the rubber grommet otherwise yes i agree Last edited by Andy the Aussie; Dec 12th, 2013 at 12:47. |

Because the ones in your link are for the regular size valve aperture in the wheel!!! It's not just about there not being a proper air-tight seal - the issue is that normal sized tyre valves can be pulled straight through the larger aperture....

Some confusion here. From my North Hants Tyres invoice the number for the large valves is TR145. They call them "Fat Valves".
Perhaps TR415 was a typo on your part Paul? |

NHT list them as TR415 on their website, so must have misprinted it on your invoice. However their price of £3:95 + VAT each is extortionate imho - to put it in perspective, I paid about a tenner (including delivery) for a bag of 25 on ebay the other year.

Ok I found some fat valves......
Not on eBay as tr145 or tr415 or whatever they are, not at several flash tyre joints I stopped at but at a skanky little place where a grubby old bloke whipped out an old Chinese take away container and hey presto, gave him a fiver and off I went.... Once I got to actually be with my wheels and a valve of each size then i was surprised by the actual difference in size, so Paul I now see your point, my info from wheel joint next to my unit was that it was a very small difference..... Any way - valves In, tyres on and bingo she's rolling again.... Still a bit of a list in front of me but it's heading the right way..... So here we go - let the whitewall or not whitewall debate begin Last edited by Andy the Aussie; Dec 12th, 2013 at 22:40. |

Nooooooo!
No whitewalls! The Swedish look is 'functional design'. Whitewalls are just pointless decoration... doesn't fit at all with the Volvo aesthetic, in my opinion. Also, if those are whitewall inserts, they can be dangerous. I've seen cases where the constant flexing has cut a deep groove into the sidewall (and hence a weak-point for overheating or stress failure of the tyre). Loving the progress on the car! Excellent work John |
