Tom. I'm a little puzzled why fixing that cluster earth hasn't fixed at least some of the problem, as the other cluster works OK. There is something else to find I think.
Ah yes. It could simply be, that cluster has problems with the earth and also with supply wires. As we know, one needs a circuit for electricity. So fixing that earth is part of the circuit. For a full job you are about to fix the supply wires. And you will I'm sure secure the body to tailgate earth. |

As a side note, there is no earth that I have found for the rear lights at the rear of the car - they must earth at the front end somewhere.
Likewise with the bumper lights, the two earth wires junctioned on the pastic diode part and a third wire haeded to the front end/dash area for it's supposed earth. A new earth at the back end fixed the bumper lights, so i'm hoping the same will occur with the proper lights. Using fiberglass for the bootlid saved weight i'm sure, but it isn't great for earthing purposes! I did do some work at the weekend, but have no current way to upload photo's from a camera, its special cable has mogged off somewhere! New one on order... I have also jst realised how expensive Halfords is in comparison to the internet or even screwfix (which is actually closer to me than anywhere else), I shall be taking all the unused halfords bits back and getting more bits for less money at screwfix! They will probably be better quality too.

From what i've seen of Toms photos, the tailgate is fibreglass.

Just seen you replies Dave and Steve after i'd posted.
Great, glad using the 7-core is ok for the hinge area, apologies Dave, i read your earlier posts on my phone at work and it was less than ideal conditions for reading! Each light cluster has it's own seperate feed from what I can see, apart from some interconnection via the numberplate lights, they are seperately wired. So the plan is to use the new 7-core wire, connected to an unbent/uncompressed area of original feed wiring inside the car each side, to replace the wiring to each rear light cluster seperately. I toyed with both wires going through one side of the tailgate and the drivers side feed going across, just above the numberplate lights, but the hinge area is so tight on space that I'm not sure two cables will fit without one getting caught by the bootlid/hinge each time the boot is opened. I will also install a new earth from the mountiung bolt of each light cluster where the PCB ring connector also resides, routed up the feed wires, and into the spare wheel well to join the earth for the bumper lights. Hopefully this solves things! And i'm hoping really quite hard!

Fibreglass !!!!!!! Well then, that alters things. I don't know where the earth crimp goes to. I haven't gone back to look. But. It remains. The earth needs to be sound to the car body to complete a circuit the battery &c. Simples. . |

Nothing wrong with fibreglass - 10 million Reliant owners can't be wrong! Just ask Princess Anne, she got nicked for speeding in one! Oh yeah, and countless boat owners too!
It's a very valid material and was also used for the tailgates on some Jeep Cherokees. I'd go for the American philosophy - there ain't no replacement for displacement and drop in a 1UZ-FE aka 4.0 V8 from the early Lexus LS400 models. You'd have to customise the paintwork with ghost-flames as it would be capable of going like a bat out of hell!
